Round 1 Notebook: Deutsche Bank Championship

Sep. 3, 2010
By John Bush, PGA TOUR Staff

• Play was suspended due to a dangerous situation at 12:35 p.m. and resumed at 1:55 p.m.

• Due to the outer bands of Hurricane Earl, lift, clean and place was in effect for the first round.

• Jason Day (63), Zach Johnson (63) and Ryan Palmer (64) -- playing in the same group -- played in a combined 23-under-par on Friday.

• All three players entered the week on a hot streak. Day and Johnson have each made nine-consecutive cuts, dating to wins in Texas -- at the HP Byron Nelson Championship (Day) and the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial (Johnson). Palmer, after five straight missed cuts, has played on the weekend in his last four starts, including a runner-up finish at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and T5 at The Barclays.

Jason Day, No. 14 in FedExCup points

• Despite two bogeys, Day opened the Deutsche Bank Championship with a career-low 8-under 63. His previous-best round was 64 (R2, 2006 U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee). His previous-best round in 2010 was 65 en route to winning the HP Byron Nelson Championship (R2).

• With 15 made cuts in 21 starts, Day has risen to No. 14 in the FedExCup standings. Any player in the top 14 that wins this week could jump into first place.

• Day claimed his first-career victory earlier this season at the HP Byron Nelson Championship. He has added additional top-10 finishes at The Barclays (T5), AT&T National (T9) and the PGA Championship (T10).

• Day has now held the first-round lead five times in his career, but never in solo fashion: 2008 RBC Canadian Open (finished T48), 2009 Puerto Rico Open (T2), 2010 HP Byron Nelson Championship (1), 2010 AT&T National (T9) and the 2010 Deutsche Bank Championship (TBD).

• Day is making his third start at the Deutsche Bank Championship, with a T19 finish in 2009 his best outing. The only Australian to win the Deutsche Bank Championship was Adam Scott in 2003.

Zach Johnson, No. 15 in FedExCup points

• Seven-time PGA TOUR winner Johnson continues to ride the momentum from a T3 at the PGA Championship, firing an opening-round 8-under 63 on Friday.

• Johnson has nine-consecutive made cuts, dating to his win at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. His T3 at the PGA Championship is his only other top-10 finish. He enters the week with 19 made cuts in 21 starts, with his only misses at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Valero Texas Open.

• Like Day, Johnson has never held solo possession of the lead after the first round of a PGA TOUR event, but he has shared the first-round lead on four occasions: 2006 John Deere Classic (finished T33), 2008 Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open (T10), 2010 Sony Open in Hawaii (T12) and the 2010 Deutsche Bank Championship (TBD).

• Johnson has played the Deutsche Bank Championship five times, with a T14 finish in 2004 his best finish.

Ryan Palmer, No. 13 in FedExCup points

• Palmer, winner of the 2010 Sony Open in Hawaii, recorded a 64 on Friday, just one shy of his season-best 63 (R3) at the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational -- which led to a runner-up finish.

• Palmer's best finish in four previous starts at the Deutsche Bank Championship is T17 in 2004. He opened that week with a 64 to share the first-round lead with Tiger Woods.

Tiger Woods, Currently No. 65 in the FedExCup standings

• Woods (T87) struggled out of the gate with four bogeys in six holes, but played the remaining 12 holes bogey free (with three birdies) to record a 1-over 72. It snaps a streak of eight consecutive rounds in the 60s for Woods at TPC Boston. A 2-over 73 during the second round in 2005 is his worst score in 25 rounds here.

Hunter Mahan, No. 7 in FedExCup points

• Mahan equaled the TPC Boston front-nine record with a 6-under 30, including an eagle on the par-4 fourth. He went on to post a 7-under 64 in his eighth start at the Deutsche Bank Championship. Others holding a share of the record include Adam Scott (2003), Tiger Woods (2006) and Mike Weir (2008).

Fredrik Jacobson, No. 50 in FedExCup points

• Jacobson equaled the TPC Boston back-nine record with a 6-under 29, joining Jonathan Kaye (2003), Marcel Siem (2005), Tom Pernice Jr. (2007) and Marc Leishman (2009).

• After equaling the record on the back nine (his first nine after starting the round on No. 10), Jacobson went on to card nine pars on his final nine holes for a 6-under 65.

Matt Jones, No. 70 in FedExCup points

• Jones posted a 6-under 65 in his first-career start at the Deutsche Bank Championship, one shy of his best round of the season (R3-Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, R1-John Deere Classic). He needs a good week this week to advance to next week's 70-player BMW Championship, as he is currently sitting on the bubble at No. 70 in the FedExCup standings.

• Jones is making his 24th start of the season, with 14 made cuts and five top-10 finishes. He finished fifth at the John Deere Classic for his best showing of the season.

Steve Stricker, No. 2 in FedExCup points

• Defending champion Stricker opened with a 6-under 65. Stricker has found his groove at TPC Boston. After missing his first three cuts from 2003-05, he has since reeled off T7 (2006), T9 (2007), T13 (2008) and 1st (2009) finishes at the Deutsche Bank Championship.

• Stricker is the only player to have played all 53 rounds in the four-year PGA TOUR Playoffs.

• Three players have finished inside the top 15 in the FedExCup standings in the first three seasons:

Player 2007 2008 2009 2010 (current position)
Phil Mickelson 3rd 7th 2nd 10th
Steve Stricker 2nd 14th 3rd 2nd
Jim Furyk 11th 5th 4th 8th

• Most Top-10s in PGA TOUR Playoff events:

8 -- Steve Stricker
7 -- Camilo Villegas
6 -- Jim Furyk, Sergio Garcia, Tiger Woods

• Friday's 65 represented Stricker's 34thround in the 60s in PGA TOUR Playoff events. Here's a look at players with the most rounds in the 60s in Playoff events:

Steve Stricker -- 34
Jim Furyk -- 27
Sergio Garcia -- 25
Camilo Villegas -- 25
Tiger Woods -- 24

Jim Furyk, No. 8 in FedExCup points

• One week after missing his pro-am tee time at The Barclays, and as a result missing his first Playoff start in four seasons, Jim Furyk carded an opening-round 5-under 66 at the Deutsche Bank Championship. He is making his sixth start at the Deutsche Bank Championship, with both of his top-10 finishes here coming in the past two years (T7 in 2008 and T8 in 2009).

Matt Kuchar, No. 1 in FedExCup points

• Kuchar, winner of The Barclays and the holder of the top spot in the FedExCup rankings, posted a 5-under 66 on Friday. He is making his seventh start at the Deutsche Bank Championship, with four made cuts and top-20 finishes in 2009 (T15) and 2004 (T17). Kuchar leads the PGA TOUR with 10 top-10 finishes.

Vijay Singh, No. 86 in FedExCup points

• The 2008 FedExCup champion has an excellent track record at the Deutsche Bank Championship, including four top-4 finishes in six previous starts (4-2003, 1-2004, 2-2006, T60-2007, 1-2008, T54-2009). With a 5-under 66 on Friday, he is now a collective 72-under at TPC Boston.

Andres Romero, No. 100 in FedExCup points

• Romero's rollercoaster rounds on TOUR continued Friday, with a 3-under 68 featuring seven birdies, four bogeys and seven pars. Romero, who barely made it into this week's event (No. 100), posted two double bogeys and three birdies in his last seven holes at The Barclays. His final birdie at Ridgewood Country Club came on the final hole, as he drained a 40 foot, six-inch putt to advance to the Deutsche Bank Championship.

Official World Golf Ranking

• It was at the 2004 Deutsche Bank Championship that Vijay Singh fired a final round 69 to win and overtake Tiger Woods as the No. 1 player in the world. This victory by Singh officially ended Woods' streak of 264 weeks at the top of the rankings. Here's a look at this week's scenarios, with Woods (72) currently holding the top spot for 273 weeks:

• Steve Stricker (65) becomes No. 1 if Woods is out of the top 9 and Phil Mickelson is out of the top 3.

• Mickelson (69) becomes No. 1 by: winning, finishing second (with Woods out of the 3) finishing third (with Woods out of the top 9) or finishing fourth (with Woods out of the top 24 and Stricker not winning).
